Close to the water but still secluded with beautiful views... Birchwood, a new let from Spring 2019, is a cosy option for couples or small families wanting to stay right on the water. The pier, the hub of island, is close by but Birchwood still maintains a feeling of seclusion and privacy, boasting a beautiful view north from the french doors and large deck to the islands of Seil and Luing and east to Loch Melfort. Birchwood Tariff 2025
Prices include 17’ assault craft or equivalent with outboard motor Additional costs - Gas £70 per week set charge. Bedding charged at £8 per single, £11 per double (£12 for the King in the Boathouse only) and £3 for two tea towels and a bathmat (except Boathouse which has two bathrooms, so if £5 for two tea towels and two bathmats). Outboard fuel for the boat depends entirely on use, weather permitting, but during the summer most people use around £40 worth of boat fuel. Please note that prices for 2026 will be £50 more per week than the listed 2025 prices. Paddling stealthily
through silk seas
we hold our breath
as the otter surfaces.
His log body floats across the waves
head raised
then with a flick
he is gone
long tail sliding into darker depths.
Up again
like a champagne cork
bobbing and chomping
on a luckless fish.
We hear bones crunching.
There’s snow in the air
and the ridges are dusted
like Christmas Stollen.
A cloud the size of Scotland
presses down on the heron’s languid flight
and a rubber-headed seal
pounces on a bouy
a toy to play with in its loch-sized bath.
Then hail hits the waves
A pounding of diamonds
Beautiful and sharp.
Mica Schist captures the brilliance
In its ripples
Nature’s mirror ball
Reflecting the rainbow’s fraying end.
We float home
with eiders whistling in our ears
the urgent flock of redwings
in the twinkling of our eyes
our heads ablaze
with birds and beasts and light.
